Moving of Cars
To import a vehicle into Switzerland that has not been cleared by customs you need to declare it at the border voluntarily for customs processing.

Vehicles that are imported as personal effects are admitted duty-free (exempt from import duties, vehicle tax and VAT), when the person importing the vehicle can prove on the basis of the vehicles registration papers that he has used the vehicle abroad for at least six months before the change of domicile to Switzerland.

The following documents must be presented at the customs office:

  • Vehicle registration document
  • Identity card
    Invoice or contract of sale
  • Declaration/Application for clearance of household effects (This document is also available in Swiss agencies abroad.)
  • A document proving change of domicile (residence permit, employment contract, lease, etc.)

If the vehicle has a German licence plate, the document Kraftfahrzeugbrief needs to be attached; if it has an Italian licence plate, the document Foglio complementare needs to be attached.

After entering Switzerland, you also need to register your vehicle for a technical check at the department of motor vehicles responsible for where you live (Swiss Federal Roads Authority)
